Employee Safety Information

Delete the Deet

The wrong insect repellant can be deadly for electric workers. Tests are showing that when DEET is sprayed directly on flame-resistant fabric, the fabric becomes flammable. Employees should find a different insect repellant to use.

We want all employees to realize the hazard that DEET can cause. Watch this video to see how flammable FR clothing becomes when sprayed with DEET.

The Missoula Technology and Development Center recommends that DEET not be applied to flame-resistant clothing. DEET could be applied to the skin so long as the application follows the manufacturer's instructions. Other products meant to repel mosquitoes also can be used on the skin, so long as the manufacturer's instructions are followed.
